VALLEJO – It’s that time again as the Vallejo community will head to the polls on November 3 to pick three councilmembers.
The nomination period will open at 8:30 a.m., on Monday, July 13 for persons interested in seeking election to the Vallejo City Council this fall.
Councilmember seats from Districts 2 (North Vallejo), 4 (Mare Island and downtown Vallejo) and 5 (Central Vallejo) will be on the ballot.
To be eligible, a potential candidate “must be a resident and elector of the district they are running for at least thirty (30) days preceding the last day for filing of nomination papers,” according to information on the Vallejo City Clerk’s webpage. “Registered voters in Vallejo must be U.S. citizens, residents of Vallejo, 18 years of age or older on the date of the election, and not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.”
City Clerk Dawn Abrahamnson, who serves as Vallejo’s chief elections official, held a pre-nomination informational meeting on Monday, June 22 explaining the city’s election process to the community and those interested in becoming an official council candidate.
A person is not an official candidate until the city clerk’s office confirms that all necessary paperwork has been submitted. The nomination period will close at 5p.m. on August 7; however, if an incumbent fails to seek re-election, non-incumbent candidates will have until 5 p.m. on August 12, to file their nomination papers.
District 2 – North Vallejo is represented by Diosdado “J.R.” Matulac, who was first elected to the seat in November 2022. Matulac, a former member of the city of Vallejo Planning Commission, has opened a re-election campaign.
Also elected in 2022, was former Planning Commissioner Charles Palmares to represent District 4 – Downtown/Mare Island, and Peter Bregenzer to represent District 5 – Central Vallejo. Bregenzer is a former member of the city’s Architectural Heritage and Landmarks Commission. Palmares has opened a re-election campaign, while Bregenzer has yet to do so.
The upcoming election has already generated interest from the community with at least four persons opening campaigns to represent District 5. They include Tara Beasley-Stansberry, and Tanya Hall, who both ran for the District 5 seat in 2022. They are joined by Jared Bunde, and Rebekah Truemper.
Meanwhile Brianna Rogers is seeking election to District 4.
