VALLEJO – After a single term on the Vallejo City Council, Peter Bregenzer will not seek a second term representing District 5 (Central Vallejo), he confirmed to JohnGlidden.com hours before the filing deadline for the November election.
“I don’t have a set reason other than I can not commit to the amount of time it takes to be a council member for another 4 years,” Bregenzer wrote in an email sent Friday afternoon.
So far, three are vying for the District 5 seat, including Architectural Heritage & Landmarks commissioner Tanya Hall, Planning Commissioner Tara Beasley-Stansberry who both ran for the same seat in 2022. They are joined by newcomer Rebekah Truemper, a consultant and business owner. All three have been actively fundraising for their respective campaigns over the past few months.
Bregenzer’s decision means the filing deadline, by state law, will be extended for five more days giving eligible persons in District 5 the opportunity to file their own paperwork. The new deadline is 5 p.m., Wednesday, August 12.
To be a bona fide council candidate, the person must be a resident and elector of the district they are running for at least thirty (30) days preceding the last day for filing of nomination papers, be a U.S. citizens, and 18 years of age or older on the date of the election and not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction, according to the clerk’s office.
District 4 – Downtown/Mare Island
Meanwhile, District 4 (Downtown/Mare Island) Councilmember Charles Palmares will be seeking re-election, according to a final candidate roster supplied by the Vallejo City Clerk’s Office.
The roster showed that Palmares pulled papers on July 17, turning them in prior to the 5 p.m., deadline on Friday, August 7.
He will be joined by two-time council hopeful, Chris Platzer. A former Planning Commissioner, Platzer was an unsuccessful District 4 council candidate in 2022, and city-wide council candidate in 2013.
Community foundation strategist Brianna Rogers is also seeking to represent the District 4 seat.
The same final candidate roster showed that community member Roxann Reyes had begun working on her candidacy paperwork but didn’t not finish prior to the deadline.
District 2 – North Vallejo
Over in North Vallejo, the only confirmed candidate is Councilman Diosdado “JR” Matulac. No others pulled papers seeking election to the District 2 council seat.
Despite being the only candidate, Matulac’s name will remain on the ballot; just like what happened during the November 2024 election when Tonia Lediju appeared on the ballot seeking election to the District 3 (Glen Cove) council seat.
Bregenzer’s decision continues trend
The recent trend of having at least one councilmember leave the dais after just a single term continues following Bregenzer’s decision. In 2020, Councilman Hermie Sunga decided against running for a fourth term. After serving from 2007 to 2014, Sunga was termed out of office via the city’s term limits. He was eligible for two fresh terms only two year after leaving the dais. He was re-elected in 2016 but decided against running for another term.
Two years later, Councilman Hakeem Brown, who was first elected in 2018, and then was defeated by then-Councilman Robert McConnell in 2020, served out his single term before leaving the council in 2022.
In 2024, Councilwoman Mina Loera-Diaz, who represented District 3, served only one four-year term on the council before leaving.
