VALLEJO – Following the decision by Vallejo councilmember Peter Bregenzer (District 5 – Central Vallejo) not to see re-election, the candidacy period was extended by five days, closing at 5 p.m., Wednesday, August 12.
No additional candidates came forward during that time.
Vallejoans living in District 5 will have three candidates to choose from: Architectural Heritage & Landmarks commissioner Tanya Hall, Planning Commissioner Tara Beasley-Stansberry, and business owner Rebekah Truemper.
Both Hall and Beasley-Stansberry ran for the District 5 council seat in 2022, ultimately losing to Bregenzer.
Bregenzer previously told JohnGlidden.com that he didn’t seek re-election because he could “not commit to the amount of time it takes to be a council member for another 4 years.”
District 2 and 4 council candidates
Meanwhile, Councilman Diosdado “JR” Matulac is the only candidate for the District 2 (North Vallejo) council seat.
There was more interest in the seat four years ago when Matulac defeated three others during the November 2022 election, including then-senior community development specialist Cassandra James, who went on to be elected to the Solano County Board of Supervisors in March 2024. The other two 2022 candidates included realtor Don Jordan, and community member Garrett Toles.
In District 4 (Downtown/Mare Island) Councilmember Charles Palmares will be seeking re-election, according to a final candidate roster supplied by the Vallejo City Clerk’s Office.
The roster showed that Palmares pulled papers on July 17, turning them in prior to the 5 p.m., deadline on Friday, August 7.
He will be joined by two-time council hopeful, Chris Platzer. A former Planning Commissioner, Platzer was an unsuccessful District 4 council candidate in 2022, and city-wide council candidate in 2013.
Community foundation strategist Brianna Rogers is also seeking to represent the District 4 seat.
The same final candidate roster showed that community member Roxann Reyes had begun working on her candidacy paperwork but didn’t not finish prior to the deadline. She has declared that she will be running a write-in campaign for the District 4 seat.
Vallejo school board candidates
Just like the city council, the Vallejo City Unified School District Board of Education will have new members after two trustees, Carlos Flores and Glenn Amboy, decided against seeking new terms.
Flores was appointed by the board in October 2022, to represent Trustee Area 1 (West Vallejo and Mare Island) after no one filed candidacy paperwork for the seat during the November 2022 election.
This time around, three community members are seeking election to represent the seat, including business owner Clarence John Martin Jr., retired teacher Judith Lerner, and tax preparer Reba Jill Brown.
Meanwhile, Amboy, who was the only candidate for the Trustee Area 3 (East Vallejo, including the Hiddenbrooke development) seat in 2022. He replaced longtime trustee Tony Ubalde.
Like the other trustee area, there is interest in Amboy’s seat as small business owner Irene Reynolds, and former Greater Vallejo Recreation District Boardmember Rizal Aliga, who is the son of former Vallejo Councilwoman Rozzana Verder-Aliga, and Retired U.S. Army Colonel Nestor Aliga.
Finally, longtime Trustee John Fox won re-election to Trustee Area 5 (Southeast Vallejo, including the Glen Cove neighborhood) after he was the only person to file candidacy paperwork. First elected by a city-wide vote in 2018, Fox defeated fellow incumbent Tony Gross to represent the trustee area, in November 2022.
